⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Buzz From Readers

"Rating this a five for simplicity and ease, and great results. I used Walmart Great Value devil's food cake mix and added some strong coffee… They came out perfectly in 20 minutes-more cakey than fudgy, very nice and so easy. Next time I may add chocolate chips, but I'll definitely be making these again!"

- Melissa

💛 Why You'll Love This Recipe

  1. Simple ingredients. You only need three ingredients to make this recipe. If you already have a box of chocolate cake mix, you may not even need a grocery run. You can also dress them up with Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting if you like.
  2. Quick to prep. Just like boxed brownies, everything comes together fast with a quick mix. These are just as easy and even more fun, which is why we love recipes made with boxed cake mix.
  3. Easy to customize. Swap the cake mix to create different flavors you will not find in boxed brownies. Try strawberry, lemon, yellow, or even different chocolate varieties for endless options.

🛒 Ingredients

ingredients needed to make Devils Food Cake Brownies.

Cake mix. Use a box of Devil's Food cake mix, or swap in any chocolate or non-chocolate flavor you like. If you have extra cake mix, try our 4 Ingredient Oatmeal Cookies, Easy Chocolate Orange Cake, or Chocolate Crockpot Lava Cake.

Eggs. Help bind the batter and give the brownies structure and texture.

Vegetable oil. Adds moisture and creates a rich, fudgy consistency.

See the recipe card below for full ingredients and instructions.

💰 Budget-Friendly Tips

Use boxed mix deals. Cake mixes frequently go on sale for under a dollar, making this a very low-cost dessert when you stock up.

Minimal add-ins. Just eggs and oil are needed, no extra butter, milk, or specialty ingredients required.

Skip the mix-ins. Chocolate chips are optional, so you can leave them out to keep costs down or add them only if you already have some on hand.

Swap flavors based on sales. Any standard cake mix works, so choose whatever flavor is cheapest that week.

👩🏻‍🍳 Expert Tips

  1. Quick and easy. Making brownies with Devil's Food cake mix could not be simpler. Just mix the ingredients, pour into the pan, and bake.
  2. Do not overmix. Stir only until the batter is combined and no dry streaks remain. Overmixing can lead to crumbly brownies instead of a soft, fudgy texture.
  3. Boost the chocolate. For extra richness, fold in 1-2 cups of chocolate chips before baking.

❄️ Storage, Reheating & Make Ahead

Storage: Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Reheating: Warm brownies in the microwave for 10-15 seconds for a gooey texture, if desired.

Make Ahead: Brownies can be baked a day ahead and stored until serving, or frozen for up to 2 months.

🥗 Side Dishes or Pairing Ideas

These brownies pair perfectly with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or fresh berries. They're also great alongside a glass of milk, coffee, or as part of a dessert tray.

    5 stars
Rating this a five for simplicity and ease of making, and great results. I made these using Walmart Great Value devil's food cake mix. I added a couple glugs of cold, brewed strong coffee (because I add that to all my brownies) and I made them in a cooking-sprayed muffin tin. They came out perfectly done in 20 minutes, more of a cakey than fudgey brownie, very very nice especially since it was so easy. When I do this again I may add some chocolate chips if I have them, but I will definitely be making these over and over.
