🛒 Ingredients
Cocoa powder- Use baking cocoa to get a good unsweetened chocolate-flavored base.
Heavy cream- Adding in heavy cream will make the hot cocoa richer and creamier.
Cadbury creme eggs- Use Cadbury creme eggs to flavor the hot chocolate and add sweetness. Unwrap them, and use both the filling and the shells.
See the recipe card below for full ingredients and instructions.
🔀 Substitutions & Variations
Milk Options. Use whatever you have, whole milk, 2%, evaporated milk, half-and-half, or dairy-free alternatives. Any of them will work for this cocoa.
Heavy Cream Swap. For a lighter drink, replace the heavy cream with additional milk. It won't be quite as rich but will still taste great.
Extra Chocolate Boost. Add 2-4 tablespoons (about ¼ cup) chocolate chips if you want a thicker, more dessert-like cocoa. It's delicious but very rich, so adjust to taste.
Sweeter Version. If you prefer your cocoa sweeter, stir in a tablespoon of sugar or a splash of vanilla after melting the eggs.
💰 Budget-Friendly Tips
Use Clearance Candy. Stock up on Cadbury Creme Eggs after Easter when they go on sale. This recipe works anytime, not just in spring.
Stretch the Batch. Add extra milk and reduce the cream to make more servings without sacrificing flavor.
Skip Extra Toppings. Whipped cream and sprinkles are optional; the drink is flavorful enough on its own.

👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
- Adjust the richness. If at any point you feel like the cocoa is just too rich or sweet you can easily tone it down by adding in a little more milk.
- Servings may vary. Depending on the size of your drinking mugs and how full you fill them you may be able to get 3 or even 4 glasses filled from this one recipe.
- Don't prep too soon. Do not chop the Creme eggs too early in preparation as the creme will start falling out of the shells and cause a mess on your cutting boards or wherever you have them placed until needed.
🥗 Side Dishes or Pairing Ideas
This Easter Egg Hot Chocolate pairs perfectly with simple pastries like muffins, cinnamon rolls, or scones. It also goes well with light snacks such as buttered toast, shortbread cookies, or fresh fruit to balance the richness of the drink.

❓ Recipe FAQs
Hot chocolate typically uses melted chocolate as its rich and flavorful base, while cocoa is often crafted with powdered cocoa or baking cocoa as its chocolate foundation. Both options are delicious, but one can yield a richer and creamier drink compared to the other.
You can use any milk that you would prefer for this hot chocolate recipe. I tend to prefer whole milk or 2% as that is what I have on hand but feel free to use unsweetened almond milk or even coffee creamer if preferred.
Avoid bringing your milk mixture to a boil; instead, aim to scald it. This means you should observe only a few gentle bubbles appearing around the pan's edges. Ensure the mixture is warm enough to completely melt the chocolate without any remaining lumps in the liquid.
