💛 Why You'll Love This Recipe

  1. It's quick and easy to make. With just a few basic steps and a couple of minutes on the clock, you can have homemade tortilla chips in no time.
  2. Perfect for leftover tortillas. Find yourself with an odd number of tortillas after taco night? Turn them into chips! You can use low carb tortillas, flour tortillas, or even corn tortillas. If you still have some leftover, make some Tortilla French Toast or Air Fryer Tortilla Pizza.
  3. They're customizable. You can add as much or as little salt as you want (even no salt). You can even get creative with different seasonings!

🛒 Ingredients

labeled ingredients needed to make air fryer tortilla chips.

Corn tortillas- We like to use corn tortillas that are about 6 inches in diameter for this recipe. Other tortillas will work just fine.

Olive oil- For an oil that helps the chips to crisp and helps to adhere the salt to the chips, you'll want to use olive oil.

Salt- We like to use pink Himalayan salt or sea salt. Use whatever you have on hand, though.

See the recipe card below for full ingredients and instructions.

🔀 Substitutions & Variations

Tortillas. I have heard that many people enjoy this recipe using flour tortillas instead of corn tortillas. If you'd like to try them with flour tortillas, feel free to do so. Nothing in the recipe steps will change as a result of this swap.

Oven-Baked Variation. To bake instead of air fry, prepare the tortillas as directed and place the wedges in a single layer on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for 7 minutes, flip, spray lightly, salt (if desired), and bake 5 more minutes or until crisp.

💰 Budget-Friendly Tips

Use leftover tortillas from taco night to avoid waste and save money.

Skip specialty salts and use regular table salt to keep costs down.

Air fry instead of deep fry for less oil use and lower cost per batch.

👩🏻‍🍳 Expert Tips

  1. For lighter oil application, stack tortillas while brushing on oil. Apply to the front and back of the bottom tortilla, then add another tortilla on top and brush only the top. Repeat for remaining tortillas to grease evenly.
  2. Add salt midway or at the end of cooking to avoid messiness and oversalting from adding it immediately after oiling tortillas.
  3. This recipe makes plenty of chips, but halve for a smaller batch. Avoid doubling to prevent overloading the air fryer and uneven cooking.
  4. If chips are still slightly chewy after cooking, they may need more time. Extend air frying by a minute or two, checking midway. Sometimes, just 20 seconds extra crisps them perfectly!

❄️ Storage

Store leftover Air Fryer Tortilla Chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-5 days. They may soften slightly over time, re-crisp them in the air fryer for 1-2 minutes before serving.

🥗 Side Dishes or Pairing Ideas

These homemade chips pair perfectly with salsa, guacamole, queso, or bean dip. Serve them alongside taco bowls, burritos, enchiladas, or Fajita Chicken for a fun Tex-Mex-style meal. They're also great for microwave nachos, sheet pan nachos, or as a crunchy side to tortilla soup.

❓ Recipe FAQs

Why are my tortilla chips chewy?

If you think your chips are chewy, return them to the air fryer for an additional minute of cooking time and check again. Oftentimes, when the chip is chewy, it means that it wasn't finished cooking.

How do you re-crisp tortilla chips in an air fryer?

If you want to liven up your tortilla chips and make them fresh again (this is great for leftovers), place the chips into the air fryer basket and cook for 1-2 minutes at 350 degrees F.

Can I make tortilla chips with no oil?

While the appearance and taste won't be exactly the same, you can make these chips without any oils at all. Just simply cut the tortillas and fry them up!

What is a healthy version of tortilla chips?

Homemade tortilla chips are simple, affordable, and healthier than regular chips. They contain little oil and fat.
