💛 Why You'll Love This Recipe

  1. Super easy. This is a simple one pot recipe. Steam the green beans, add the seasonings, and you're done.
  2. Quick to make. From start to finish, including pressurizing and releasing, the whole process takes about 15 minutes with very little hands on time.
  3. Goes with anything. These green beans pair well with chicken, pork, beef, or just about any main dish.

🛒 Ingredients

labeled ingredients needed to make instant pot green beans.

Fresh Green Beans- You will want to use some fresh green beans that have been washed and trimmed. If you have more fresh green beans, try these Italian Green Beans with Tomatoes.

Water- Adding in water is necessary to get your Instant Pot to work properly.

Seasonings- We like to keep the seasonings simple by just using Salt, Pepper, Onion Powder, and Garlic Powder.

See the recipe card below for full ingredients and instructions.

💰 Budget-Friendly Tips

Buy green beans in season. Fresh green beans are usually cheapest during peak season and often available in larger bags at a lower per-pound cost.

Stick with pantry spices. Garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper are affordable staples that work across many meals.

Cook once, use twice. Make extra green beans and reuse leftovers in casseroles, stir-fries, or grain bowls later in the week.

Skip the steamer basket if needed. Cooking the beans directly in the water still works well and avoids extra equipment purchases.

🥄 Instructions for Instant Pot Green Beans

wash and trim green beans then add water, trivet, and green beans to instant pot.

Step 1: Wash your fresh green beans and cut off the ends. If needed, break long green beans in half so that they fit inside the Instant Pot. (Image 1).

Step 2: Place one cup of water (or 1.5 cups of water if using an 8-quart IP) in the pot liner. (Image 2). If using a steamer basket, add it now. (Image 3).

Step 3: Place the green beans inside the Instant Pot or in an Instant Pot Steamer Basket. (Image 4).

cook green beans and then toss in seasoning and oil.

Step 4: Set to High Pressure and Cook for 1 minute. (Image 5).

Step 5: Do a quick release of the pressure and then open the lid. (Image 6).

Step 6: Remove the green beans and place into a mixing bowl, or drain the liquid and use your Instant Pot. Add in the olive oil and seasonings. (Image 7).

Step 7: Toss gently to coat the green beans in the mixture. (Image 8).

Step 9: Serve warm. Enjoy!

👩🏻‍🍳 Expert Tips

  1. Prep the Beans. Rinse the green beans well, then trim about ¼ inch from the ends. You can snap or cut them in half if you prefer smaller, uniform pieces.
  2. Steaming Setup. A steamer basket is helpful but not required. You can steam the beans on a trivet or cook them directly in the water like a quick boil.
  3. Water Amount. Use 1 cup of water for a 6 quart Instant Pot or 1½ cups for an 8 quart to allow proper pressurization.
  4. Season After Cooking. The water is only for steaming and will be drained. Add seasonings once the green beans are tender.

❄️ Storage and Reheating

Storage: Store cooked green beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Reheating: Reheat Instant Pot Green Beans in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute or warm gently in a skillet.

❓ Recipe FAQs

How long to cook green beans in Instant Pot

You can steam these Instant Pot fresh green beans for anywhere between 0-3 minutes. 0 minutes on High Pressure will give you a very firm bite, whereas 3 minutes will be much more tender, if not a bit mushy.

How to season steamed green beans

I like to use a very basic combination of salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder for my green beans when I want a simple side dish. Using minced garlic, bacon bits, cooked onions, or even parmesan cheese and lemon juice can also be great ideas for getting more flavor into your greens!

Do steamed green beans freeze well?

Yes, they will freeze well. Because they have already been cooked, there is nothing to do except allow the green beans to cool completely and place them in an airtight container in the freezer.
They can last up to 12 months in the freezer if properly stored! Of course, eating them sooner rather than later helps to avoid freezer burn and flavor loss.
