💛 Why You'll Love This Recipe
- It's simple. Made with some basic pantry staple ingredients, this recipe comes together pretty easily and quickly.
- It tastes great with any side breakfast side dish. We usually serve our french toast with a side of fresh fruit and turkey bacon, but feel free to try other breakfast favorites too like Homemade Frozen Hashbrowns. The sky's the limit here!
- It's a nice twist to a classic. Made with almond milk and egg whites, we really reduce a lot of calories, cholesterol, and saturated fats. You can even use low-carb or whole-wheat bread if desired.
🛒 Ingredients

Egg Whites- You can use liquid egg whites from a carton or actual eggs with the yolks removed.
Almond milk- Any milk will work just fine, but almond milk is much lower in calories.
Sliced bread- I like to keep things simple with some sliced sandwich bread, but feel free to use any sliced bread you have on hand.
See the recipe card below for full ingredients and instructions.
💰 Budget-Friendly Tips
Use leftover egg whites. This recipe is perfect for using up the extra whites from recipes like my Custard Cream Pie or Single Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe. No waste, full savings.
Use day-old bread. Slightly stale bread is often discounted and actually works better for French toast because it holds up without getting soggy.
Swap ingredients to fit your budget. Regular milk works just as well as almond milk, and you can use whatever bread is cheapest, white, wheat, or even leftover hamburger buns.

Step 8: Flip the bread over and cook the other side for an additional 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.

👩🏻🍳 Expert Tips
Quick dip only. The egg white mixture is thin, so lightly dip each side of the bread, don't soak it. Oversoaking makes the bread too wet and difficult to handle.
Prevent sogginess. If the bread sits in the mixture for more than a second or two, it will absorb too much liquid, become mushy, and may fall apart when you lift it to the pan.
❄️ Storage and Make Ahead
Storage: Keep leftover French toast in a Ziploc bag or airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave or enjoy cold straight from the fridge.
Make Ahead: Freeze cooked French toast by placing slices on a baking sheet for 1 hour, then transferring them to an airtight container. Freeze for up to 2 months and reheat before serving.

❓ Recipe FAQs
One of the biggest mistakes when making french toast is not thoroughly mixing together the eggs and milk. This leaves long stringy bits of egg white throughout the batter and gives the french toast more of a "scrambled egg" taste. To correct this, I recommend using a whisk instead of a fork to blend the mixture, or running it through the blender for a few pulses.
Adding milk to the french toast mixture helps to coat and soften the bread and give a more custard-like consistency in the center.
If your french toast is soggy, it could be that you either oversoaked the bread or that you had too high of a temperature on your pan, resulting in cooked outsides and raw centers.
