🍯 Why This Recipe Works
- It's pretty fool proof. No adding baking soda or vinegar to the pot. No stabbing the eggs with a needle to make a tiny hole in the shell. No crazy gimmicks, just an Instant Pot and some water.
- Turns out perfectly every time. This is the only egg boiling method that I can truly swear by. It works for me every single time I try it and I'm sure you'll have great results too!
- It's easy to remember. With a name like 5-5-5 you can easily remember the steps, 5 minutes of this, 5 minutes of that, etc.
🥘 Ingredients
Ingredient Notes:
Eggs- You will need a good amount of raw eggs for this recipe. I recommend having them be at least a week old as older eggs will work better than fresh ones.
Water- To use your Instant Pot you will need a set amount of water (either 1 cup or 1.5 cups). You will also need some water in the ice bath.
Ice- Ice cubes will go into the ice bath which will shock the eggs after cooking and help to make them even easier to peel.

🍴 Recipe Tips
When using the Instant Pot for hard-boiled eggs, timing is key. The 5-minute cook time doesn't include pressure build-up or release.
Here's the drill:
- Seal the lid and set the timer for 5 minutes.
- Wait for it to reach pressure, then countdown your 5 minutes.
- After the beep, let it sit for another 5 minutes to depressurize.
- Transfer eggs to an ice bath immediately.
Pro tip: If you've got long nails, try to use the sides of your thumb and fingers to pop the peel off and avoid damaging those perfectly cooked eggs.
👩🏻🍳 Storage
Peeled Eggs: Peeled eggs have a shorter shelf life and will typically last in the fridge for about a day.
Unpeeled Eggs: On the other hand, unpeeled eggs can be stored for up to a week in the refrigerator. If you're meal prepping, it's wise to keep the eggs unpeeled until you're ready to use them to extend their freshness.
Meal Prepping Tip: Meal prepping, like saving egg peeling for later, extends ingredient shelf life and benefits budget-conscious individuals. If you're looking for tips on How to Make a Healthy Grocery List On a Budget, meal prepping like this can be a great asset to your wallet.
💭 Recipe FAQs
No, I cannot recommend this. To freeze the eggs will result in a rubbery and watery mess of egg after they thaw. Not ideal. Raw eggs, out of the shell can be frozen (in ice trays) if planning to use in baked recipes.
You should not leave eggs out of the fridge for more than 2 hours after cooking. Unless you plan on using them immediately, allow them to cool and then place them in the fridge until ready to use.
A simple test to check on the age and quality of your eggs is placing them into a glass or bowl of water. If the eggs float at the top or stand up, then it is old and you should either use quickly or discard. If they're at the bottom, then they're still fresh.
