🥄 Instructions for Honey Baked Spiral Ham

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 325°F. Line a roasting pan with two large pieces of foil and stagger them in the pan so there's a slight overlap. You want them long enough that they can reach up and over the ham to seal it in while keeping the ham from directly touching the pan.

Step 2: Place the ham into the center of the pan, place it cut-side down. Add in water or apple juice. (Image 1).

Step 3: Bring the foil up and over the ham and pinch to seal it in the foil "bag" you've just created. (Image 2).

Step 4: Bake for 10-12 minutes per pound or until fully heated through (usually 1.5-2 hours for a 9-lb ham).

Step 5: Make the glaze. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine honey, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, spices, and coffee (if using). (Image 3). Bring to a simmer and stir constantly until thickened slightly (5-7 minutes). It should be syrupy. (Image 4).

Step 6: About 30 minutes before the ham has finished cooking, remove the foil from the top and roll it down to the sides of the pan like a ring. This will help to create a dam for liquid to not slosh out of the pan.

Step 7: During the last 30 minutes of cooking, brush your ham with a generous amount of glaze every ten minutes until the ham is done. Return to the oven after each time. (Image 5).

Step 8: Optional* Broil the ham for 1-2 minutes after cooking to make the glaze extra caramelized. Make sure to watch it closely so it doesn't burn.

Step 9: Remove from oven and let rest 10-15 minutes before serving. (Image 6).

  • 1-2 teaspoon brewed or instant coffee, optional - ($0.05)

Instructions

  • Prep. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Line a roasting pan with overlapping foil large enough to wrap the ham.
  • Bake covered. Place the ham cut-side down in the pan. Add the water or juice. Wrap the foil over the ham to form a tent. Bake 10 to 12 minutes per pound until heated through.
  • Make the glaze. In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the honey, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, spices, and coffee if using. Simmer 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often, until thick and syrupy.
  • Glaze. About 30 minutes before the ham is done, open the foil and fold it down to form a ring. Brush the glaze generously over the ham.
  • Caramelize. Continue baking uncovered, brushing with glaze every 10 minutes, until glossy and golden.
  • Broil optional. Broil for 1 to 2 minutes for extra caramelization, watching closely.
  • Rest and serve. Rest 10 to 15 minutes before slicing.

  • Reheating. Reheat leftover ham in the oven at 325°F for 10-15 minutes with water or juice, or microwave with a damp paper towel for quicker reheating.
