Have some family fun this Fall with edible pumpkin playdough. Made with just three pantry staples and in about 5 minutes you can have fun for hours, if not days while smelling like pumpkin pie.

My kids love it when I make homemade playdough and this pumpkin spice play dough has been a huge hit around here this fall, especially because I've been stocking up on canned pumpkin like crazy.

Making pumpkin playdough using canned pumpkin is a super simple way to make sure that the playdough is the perfect color and smell for Fall. Not only that, but it keeps it safe for those kids that just can't help but to "sample" their playdough.

I swear that my son will try to eat anything, so edible homemade playdough has been a real comfort to me knowing he isn't filling himself with toxins or a pound of salt.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • It's easy. Just mix a few ingredients together, and it's done. Ready to be used within moments. How cool is that?
    • No cooking is required. This pumpkin playdough recipe is no cook. Just grab a bowl and a spoon. Perfect for hot days, lazy days, and every day in between.
    • Safe ingredients. Everything about this play dough is edible, and while it may not taste great, parents can feel more confident in knowing it's safe.

Disclaimer: While this recipe is made using edible ingredients found within your home, I do not recommend purposefully feeding your child this product. If they choose to take a lick or small taste they should be just fine, but this product is meant to be something to play with and not to eat. Thanks!

    🧾 Substitutions

Pumpkin pie spice. If you do not have pumpkin pie spice on hand you can just use 1 Tablespoon of ground cinnamon. You can also do a blend of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ground ginger, and allspice depending on what you have on hand.

Pumpkin pie spice. You can DIY your own pumpkin pie spice by mixing together 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon (or 5 teaspoons) along with 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, and ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves or allspice. Mix together and then use as much as directed. Save the rest for future recipes for up to 3 months.

Cornstarch. You can replace the cornstarch with flour if desired but the actual amount needed will vary so add it in a little at a time until the desired consistency has been reached.

    👪Add-Ins

If desired you can turn this fall playdough into a fun sensory project by adding in different edible items with different textures for example any of these ideas would work well:

    • Sunflower seeds
    • Pumpkin seeds
    • Rice
    • Dry pasta noodles
    • Dried beans
    • Cinnamon sticks
two balls of pumpkin playdough shaped to look like pumpkins with cinnamon sticks
