This super simple DIY saves money, reduces waste, and works beautifully with reusable cloths, perfect for old t-shirts or scraps of flannel. Plus, it smells amazing and costs just $0.26 per batch. I keep a bottle right in the laundry room so it's always ready to go.

Looking for a way to soften laundry and leave it smelling great, without waste or chemicals? This DIY linen spray with fabric softener works like a charm, especially when paired with reusable cloths. No more clingy dryer sheets getting stuck in your shirts or vanishing mid-cycle.

The scent is totally customizable too; use lavender, citrus, or whatever essential oil matches your homemade vibe. I love rotating this with my DIY Disinfectant Spray for seasonal scents (like peppermint in winter or lemon in summer!).

Want to make a whole laundry kit? Try this alongside my DIY Cleaning Paste for the washer and Homemade Stainless Steel Cleaner for the machines themselves!

🍯 Why This Product Works:

  1. It's waste-free. Ditching disposable sheets reduces waste and lets you reuse what you already have (like cut-up old t-shirts, or wash cloths hanging on to their last shred of life).
  2. It's wildly affordable. At just 26 cents per batch, this is one of the cheapest ways to upgrade your laundry routine.
  3. It's customizable. You choose the scent and fabric, making it perfect for sensitive skin or eco-conscious households.

🧼 Ingredients Needed

labeled ingredients for making dryer sheet spray.

White Vinegar- Vinegar is a natural fabric softener that helps relax fabric fibers, making clothes feel softer. It also reduces static cling in the laundry while absorbing and eliminating odors. Instead of just covering up smells, vinegar neutralizes them at the source. (Note: We also use this in The BEST Homemade Window Cleaner and our All Purpose Citrus Vinegar Cleaner).

Hair Conditioner (or Fabric Softener)- Hair conditioner or fabric softener is added to the dryer sheet spray because they help soften fabrics, reduce static cling, and add a pleasant scent to laundry.

Essential Oil (Optional)- Essential oils are added to the dryer sheet spray to provide a natural, pleasant fragrance and can also offer antibacterial or deodorizing benefits.

⚠️ Pet Safety Disclaimer: Many essential oils are toxic to pets. Always check safety first.

🧹Instructions for Dryer Sheet Spray

measure out ingredients and mix together.
  1. Mix your base
In a jar or bottle, combine 1 cup of white vinegar with your fabric softener or conditioner (if using).
  2. Add essential oils
Choose a calming scent like lavender or energizing citrus. Swirl or shake to mix.
  3. Store properly
Pour into a spray bottle or keep in a tightly sealed jar.
  4. Use with reusable cloths
Lightly spray your cloth square until damp (not soaked), then toss into the dryer with your laundry load.
  5. Shake before each use
The oils and vinegar will naturally separate, so give it a shake each time.

You can make a batch of these while whipping up a jar of DIY Disinfectant Spray-they share ingredients like vinegar and essential oils, which makes prep super efficient.

🧽Expert Tips

Don't over-soak your cloth. A light spritz is enough to get that scent going; more isn't always better.

Sensitive skin? Skip the fabric softener and just use essential oil (or none at all).

Label your bottles. Trust me, you don't want to mistake this for your DIY Glass and Mirror Spray later.

Avoid dryer build-up. Wash reusable cloths occasionally without spray to prevent residue on your dryer drum.

🪣Storage

Store in a cool, dark place like under your laundry sink or cleaning caddy.

Keep the lid tightly closed to preserve the scent.

Shelf life: 3-6 months, depending on essential oil freshness.

✅ When It's Okay to Use as a Linen Spray:

Want to use this spray on your couch pillows or other linens?

  • Diluted properly: If you're using the basic version (vinegar + essential oils or a small amount of conditioner), it's gentle enough for fabrics.
  • Test first: Spray on a small, hidden spot to make sure it doesn't leave marks, especially with essential oils or fabric softener.
  • Light mist only: Don't soak, just a quick spritz is all you need to refresh the scent.

⚠️ Avoid if:

  • Your fabric is delicate, silk, or velvet.
  • You've used a colored fabric softener or hair conditioner that could stain.
  • You're sensitive to strong scents or essential oils (especially on items near your face like pillows or blankets).

If you're looking to make a version just for fabric refreshing, you can skip the softener/conditioner and just use 1 cup distilled water, 1 tablespoon vinegar, and a few drops of essential oils.

🧤Product FAQs

Does this really replace commercial dryer sheets?

Yes! While it doesn't reduce static quite as much, it offers fragrance and softening, especially if you add conditioner or fabric softener.

Can I use this with wool dryer balls?

Yes, just spray the wool ball lightly before tossing it in.

Will vinegar make my clothes smell?

Nope! The vinegar smell evaporates completely during the drying cycle.

Is this safe for baby clothes or cloth diapers?

Skip the essential oils and softeners if using on baby items. Vinegar alone works well for softening.

Can I make a big batch?

Absolutely. Just shake before each use and store it in a tightly sealed bottle or jar.

This spray has been a life saver when we "forget" a load of laundry in the washing machine.
