💛 Why You'll Love This Recipe

  1. Set it and forget it. Everything simmers in the slow cooker, so no babysitting a boiling pot.
  2. Uses affordable ingredients. Clearance apples? Ground spices? Perfect.
  3. Naturally scalable. Double it for a party, or freeze portions for quick mugs later.

🛒 Ingredients

labeled ingredients needed to make crockpot apple cider.
  • Apples - The base of all the flavor; mixing varieties gives a fuller, more complex cider.
  • Orange - Adds brightness and natural acidity to balance the sweetness.
  • Brown Sugar - Deepens the caramel notes and rounds out the spices.
  • Ground Cinnamon, Nutmeg & Cloves - Provide warm, cozy spice that dissolves into the cider.
  • Water - Extracts the flavor from the apples as they slowly break down.

See the recipe card below for full ingredients and instructions.

🔀 Substitutions & Variations

Apples: Any variety works. Sweeter apples give a naturally sweeter cider; tart apples create a brighter, sharper flavor. Mixing both is ideal.

Orange: Omit if you prefer a pure apple flavor, or sub in a splash of lemon juice at the end.

Brown Sugar: Swap with maple syrup, white sugar, or coconut sugar. Maple gives the deepest flavor.

Spices: Use pumpkin spice in place of cinnamon/nutmeg/cloves; it blends beautifully.

🥣 Recipe Add-Ins

Try adding ginger, cardamom, vanilla, maple syrup, or even a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar for an incredible flavor boost.

💰 Budget-Friendly Tips

Use discounted or imperfect apples. Any apples on sale work well, including mixed bags, bruised produce, or older wrinkly apples from your pantry. This recipe is perfect for using them up. I get most of my discounted fruit through the FlashFood app. Sign up with this referral link and save $5 off your first order of $7 or more.

Choose ground spices over whole. Ground spices are more affordable, easier to store, and dissolve directly into the cider for consistent flavor. If you're building a frugal spice collection, check out my Frugal Pantry Staples to Keep on Hand for must-have seasonings.

Stretch the batch without losing flavor. Add 1 to 2 extra cups of water, then balance with a little more sugar and a splash of lemon juice to increase yield without watering it down.

Freeze leftovers for a flavor boost. Apple cider freezes well and can be added to future batches for deeper apple flavor. This is an easy, free upgrade.

🥄 Instructions for Crockpot Apple Cider Recipe

add sliced fruit, sugar, and seasonings to crockpot, then add water.

Step 1: Load the Crock Pot. Add quartered apples, sliced orange, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and water to a 6-7 qt slow cooker. (Images 1 & 2)

Step 2: Cook on HIGH 3-4 hours or LOW 6-8 hours, until apples are extremely soft.

cook and mash, strain and return to pot, then add fresh fruit slices for garnish.

Step 3: Use a potato masher to crush the apples, releasing natural juices and sweetness. (Image 3)

Step 4: Pour through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove solids. (Step 4) Press gently for maximum flavor. Return to crockpot and set to "warm." (Image 5)

Step 5: Taste and add extra sugar, lemon juice, or spices until perfect. For presentation, you can add a sliced apple and orange to the pot. (Image 6)

Step 6: Serve warm. Ladle into mugs and enjoy!

👩🏻‍🍳 Expert Tips

  1. Don't peel or core the apples. The slow cooker extracts every bit of flavor from the skins and cores, and everything strains out at the end, no extra work needed.
  2. Expect cloudy cider when using ground spices. Ground spices naturally create a cloudy appearance, which is completely normal and actually makes the cider taste richer and warmer.
  3. Reduce the cider if the flavor seems weak. Simmer the strained cider uncovered for 20-30 minutes to concentrate the flavor and intensify the sweetness and spice.
  4. Strain twice for extra-smooth cider. For a clean, silky texture, pour the cider through a fine mesh strainer and then again through cheesecloth, or let it rest so the spices settle to the bottom.

❄️ Storage, Reheating & Make Ahead

Storage: Refrigerate 4-5 days or freeze for up to 3 months. I love saving leftover cider to add to the next day's batch, instant depth!

Reheating: Warm gently on the stovetop or in the crockpot on LOW.

Make Ahead: Make it 1-2 days before serving; flavors actually deepen overnight.

🥗 Side Dishes or Pairing Ideas

This apple cider pairs wonderfully with all kinds of seasonal snacks and treats like cookies, baked breads, and more. Pair it with spiced treats like eggnog poke cake, pumpkin bread, and gingerbread loaf for a flavorful combination.

❓ Recipe FAQs

Can I make cider from scratch using whole apples or use pre-made apple cider/juice?

Yes! This recipe uses whole apples, but you can also simmer store-bought cider with the same spices for a shortcut.

Do I need to peel or core the apples?

Nope, everything strains out, and the peels add flavor.

What kind of apples should I use?

Any variety works. A blend of sweet + tart gives the best balance.

What spices work best, and should I use ground or whole spices?

Either. Whole spices are easier to strain out; ground spices sink to the bottom and are cheaper and more accessible.

Do I need to add a sweetener?

Taste first, apple sweetness varies. Brown sugar or maple syrup boosts flavor if needed.
