Making your own crochet market bag isn't just a fun project; it's a smart, sustainable choice that fits a frugal lifestyle. It folds flat, stretches to hold more than expected, and saves money by replacing disposable grocery bags.

Whether you're grabbing produce, books, or picnic items, it's strong, flexible, and ready to go.

At Beeyond Cereal, we focus on low-cost recipes and cutting waste, from How to Make Brown Sugar and How to Make Bread Flour to easy freezer meals like our Chicken Fajita Freezer Meal. A reusable bag naturally fits that mindset.

🍯 Why This Pattern Works:

  1. Two-Skein Practicality. Made with only two skeins of cotton yarn, it's cost-effective while still being roomy and durable enough for everyday use.
  2. Beginner-Friendly, Yet Beautiful. Perfect for confident beginners, this pattern uses basic stitches to create a mesh-style tote with polished structure and shape.
  3. Totally Customizable. Easily adjust the height, width, or handle length by adding or removing rounds, tailor it to your style and needs.

🪡 Materials Needed

labeled materials needed to make crochet market bag.
  • 240yds worsted weight cotton yarn- You will need almost two full skeins of cotton yarn to make this pattern as-is. If you'd like yours bigger, you will need more yarn. If trying to make a solid colored bag, you'll want to make sure the yarn is all from the same dye lot so it doesn't vary too much.
  • 5 mm crochet hook- You could also use a 5.5mm hook if you want a slightly looser mesh.
  • Yarn needle- For weaving the yarn ends into the project.
  • Scissors- For cutting the yarn as needed.
  • Stitch marker- I like to keep things simple by just using a safety pin.

📖Variations

  • Use a variegated yarn for a rainbow effect
  • Add a contrasting color trim or bottom
  • Shorten the mesh section for a handbag-style tote
  • Crochet a button loop and closure if desired

💭Abbreviations to Remember (US terms)

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sk - skip
  • sp - space
  • st - stitch

🧶 Instructions for Crochet Market Bag

Base of Bag

Worked in Rounds

chain, turn, and add along curve to make oval of desired size.

Round 1:
Ch 25. (See Image 1.) In the second chain from the hook, work 2 single crochets (sc). (Image 2.) Work 1 sc in each of the next 22 chains.

In the last chain, work 4 sc. This curves your work to the opposite side.
Continue down the other side, working 1 sc in the next 22 stitches.
In the final stitch, work 2 sc, then slip stitch (sl st) to join. (Image 3.)
(52 stitches total)

Round 2:
Ch 1. Work 2 sc in the first stitch, then 1 sc in each of the next 22 stitches.
At the curved end, work 2 sc in each of the next 4 stitches. Continue with 1 sc in the next 22 stitches, then 2 sc in each of the last 2 stitches. Sl st to join.
(60 stitches total)

Round 3:
Ch 1. Work 1 sc, then 2 sc in the next stitch around the curved ends. Sc evenly across the straight edges. Adjust spacing slightly if needed to end evenly. Sl st to join.
(You should have approximately 68-72 stitches, depending on tension.)

Continuing Rounds:
Repeat this pattern, adding 8 stitches per round (4 on each curved end) by working increases at the ends and regular sc across the straight sides, until you reach a total of 94 stitches. (Image 4.)

Want a bigger bag? See tips for increasing sizes below.

Sides of Bag

double crochet chain and skip to make mesh netting sides.

Round 4:
Ch 4 (counts as 1 double crochet + ch 1). *Skip the next stitch, dc in the following stitch, ch 1. Repeat from * around. (Image 5.) At the end of the round, sl st into the 3rd chain of your starting ch-4 to join. (Image 6.)

Rounds 5-20 (or to desired height):
Sl st into the next chain space. Ch 4, dc in the next chain space, ch 1, repeat around. (Image 7.) Sl st to the 3rd chain of the beginning ch-4 to join each round.

Continue this mesh pattern until your bag reaches the height you want.

Tip:
Want a sturdier or more decorative finish?
Try adding 2-3 rounds of plain single crochet (sc) or double crochet (dc) somewhere in the middle of the mesh section. It not only strengthens the structure but also adds a nice visual break. (Image 8.)

add several single crochet rounds at top including handles.

Top Edge

Rounds 21-22:
Ch 1.
Work 1 single crochet (sc) in each double crochet and chain space around the top edge. (Image 9.)
Sl st to join each round.
You should have 94 sc in total at the end of Round 22.

Handles

(Round 23): Sl st to the first stitch of the round.

Then:

  • Sc in the next 25 stitches.
  • Ch 40 for short handles (or ch 70 for long handles).
  • Skip the next 20 stitches, then sc in the next 27 stitches. (Image 10.)
  • Ch 40 (or 70) for the second handle.
  • Skip 20 stitches, then sc in the last 2 stitches to complete the round.
  • Sl st to the first stitch to join.

Rounds 24-25:
Sc in every stitch and chain around, including over the handles. This reinforces the handles and strengthens the bag opening. (Image 11.)

Finishing: Fasten off and weave in all ends securely. (Image 12.)

🎉 Done!

✂️Expert Tips

  • Use 100% cotton yarn. It's strong, holds its shape, and won't stretch like acrylic. It's also more heat-resistant and washable.
  • Wash and block before use. A quick soak and flat dry softens the cotton and helps even out tension or shaping.
  • Take your time on the base. Those early rounds shape the whole bag. Keep increases even so the base lays flat and doesn't ripple.
  • Count your stitches. It's easy to miss one in mesh rounds. A stitch marker helps keep track at the start of each round.
  • Stretch test the handles. Before the final rows, hold the bag up with weight inside to check handle length and stretch.
  • It will stretch! Mesh bags often look small at first but expand a lot when filled. Trust the process.
  • Uneven mesh? It's likely tension. Once you wash and block, most minor imperfections smooth out nicely.

🧺 Resizing Tips

To widen the base, add 8 stitches per round (4 on each curve) until you reach your desired width. Keep the final base stitch count the same through the mesh and top rounds.

Handle placement: Divide your total stitches evenly and skip the same number between handles for balance.

🧮 Handle Placement Formula

(Total stitches−Skipped stitches)÷2=Single crochets between handles

Example:
Total stitches = 94
Skipped stitches = 20 per handle × 2 = 40

Calculation: (94−40)÷2=27

So: Sc 25, ch 40 (handle), skip 20, sc 27, ch 40 (handle), skip 20, sc last 2.

When resizing:

  • Keep skipped stitches (usually 20) and handle chain lengths (40 or 70) consistent.
  • Adjust sc stitches between handles using the formula.

🧵Pattern FAQs

Is cotton or acrylic yarn better for crochet bags?

Cotton yarn is generally better for crochet bags because it's strong, durable, and holds its shape with minimal stretch. Acrylic yarn stretches more and may lose shape when carrying heavier loads, making cotton the preferred choice for most market bags.

Can you crochet a market bag with acrylic yarn?

Yes, you can crochet a market bag with acrylic yarn. However, acrylic tends to stretch more than cotton and may not support heavy items as well over time.

Is this machine washable?

Yes! Just use 100% cotton yarn and wash on cold, then reshape and air dry flat.

How long does this take to make?

Around 4-6 hours, depending on your speed and any customizations.

How long will a crochet bag last?

A crochet bag made with good-quality 100% cotton yarn can last 3 to 5 years or more with regular use. Its lifespan depends on yarn quality, how often and heavily you use it, and how well you care for it. Gentle washing and drying flat help maintain its shape and strength. Proper storage away from moisture and sunlight also prevents damage. With good care, your bag can be a durable, eco-friendly companion for years.

What is the best yarn for market bags?

The best yarn for market bags is 100% cotton. Cotton is strong, durable, and holds its shape well, making it perfect for carrying groceries or heavier items. It's also breathable, washable, and becomes softer with use. Look for worsted or sport weight cotton yarn for a good balance of sturdiness and flexibility. Avoid acrylic or blends that stretch too much or don't hold weight well.
