These vegan burger buns are super easy to make and require only 6 ingredients and a few minutes of active work to make. The end results are fluffy golden topped buns that are perfect for any BBQ.
Make dough. In a large bowl, whisk together the warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes until foamy. Stir in the oil. Add the all-purpose flour and salt and mix until a dough forms.
Knead. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Add additional flour as needed until the dough is no longer sticky.
First rise. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.
Shape buns. Punch down the dough and divide into 8 equal portions. Roll into smooth balls and place on a greased baking sheet.
Second rise. Cover loosely and let rise again until doubled. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
Bake. Brush the tops with olive oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Bake for about 15 minutes, until golden brown.
Cool. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Bread machine option. Add ingredients to the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select the dough cycle. When complete, continue with shaping and baking steps above.
Notes
Portioning. Each bun weighs about 3.1 ounces, though exact weights may vary.
Kneading check. Dough should be elastic and spring back lightly when pressed.
Flour variation. Flour needs vary by humidity and temperature. Add gradually during kneading to control stickiness.
Texture. Buns will be firm when hot and soften as they cool. Slight wrinkling later indicates good moisture retention.
