This air fryer custard toast recipe only needs a few ingredients and moments of prep. It's a fabulous way to get a healthier breakfast on your plates and add a little color too.
Combine the egg, yogurt, and maple syrup in a small bowl with a whisk until smooth and well combined.
Use your fingers or the back of a spoon to press a "bowl" into your bread, leaving the crust untouched around the edges as this will help to hold the custard inside.
Spoon the custard into the indentation that you made and then add fresh berries or toppings if desired.
Air Fryer Method
Cook in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 4-5 minutes. The custard should look set and the edges of the bread should just begin to brown.
Oven Baked Method
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F while you prepare your toast.
Place the filled bread onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Bake for 8-12 minutes or until done.
Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup and powdered sugar if desired (this is optional).
Notes
Substitutions
Greek yogurt. You can use regular yogurt instead of greek yogurt if you don't have it on hand. This does reduce some of the "healthy" aspects from the recipe, and the custard filling will be sweeter too.
Maple syrup. You can use honey as a natural sweetener instead of maple syrup, but agave works great too.
Bread. You can use any kind of sliced bread from regular sandwich bread to sourdough, potato bread, whole grain, or even sliced brioche. The goal is to get a bread that is soft enough that you can press it down to make the indentation to hold the custard in the middle.
Recipe Tips
Use any selection of fresh berries or fruits as a topping. Other toppings include chocolate chips or even rainbow sprinkles!
Make sure to not overfill the custard as it does rise slightly as it bakes, making a bit of a mess if you add too much into the bread.
This custard mix can make about 2-3 slices of bread depending on how much you fill them and how big of a slice of bread is used.
Make sure that you whisk the custard mixture well to incorporate the eggs well because if you don't, you may end up with clumps of scrambled egg in your toast.
You can make this recipe dairy free by choosing to use a dairy free bread and yogurt.
Storage
You can keep your leftover toast stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat again in the air fryer or oven to warm it through before serving, if desired.
