A simple homemade chocolate gravy recipe that everyone will go nuts for! This is an easy southern classic dish and one that really feels comforting in the morning. With just a few minutes of effort you can have an easy plate of biscuits and chocolate gravy for breakfast (or dessert!)
In a medium sized pot on the stove over medium heat, combine all of the ingredients except for the butter. Whisk together and bring to a slow boil while whisking continually.
When you feel the mixture has thickened, remove from heat and add in the butter. Whisk until the butter has melted and the gravy looks set.
Pour over biscuits and enjoy!
Notes
Unlike other gravies and sauces, this one doesn't start with the butter. The butter is added last in a step known as "mounting the butter." It adds a nice luxurious effect, a pretty shine, and depth of richness.Keeping this gravy from getting chunky is the trick. As it cools, it forms a skin on the top like any homemade pudding would. Not only that but the ingredients in the pot don't always dissolve. If you want it smoother, you can sift the dry ingredients together in a bowl before adding to the pot.By choosing to use non-dairy milk and plant-based margarine, you can easily make this recipe dairy free. I've personally tried it both ways and it's still delicious.
