You've never had a french toast recipe like this before. It's fluffy, well-spiced, sweet, and absolutely perfect. Best part? You don't need stale bread, so just grab a loaf of sourdough and get started!

Using sourdough for french toast may not be your first choice but it should be. Whether you enjoy sourdough or not, this recipe is good great.
We aren't big fans of sourdough around here. In fact, we rarely buy it, if ever. But I just HAD to try it in french toast and I am so glad that I did because this french toast recipe with sourdough bread will be my new go-to recipe.
The bread soaks in the egg mixture well enough that even though the bread is fresh, you still get firm outsides and a custard-like center. The sweet offsets the tangy bread and together, they harmonize to the point where every bite is blissful.

Why This Recipe Works
- There is no aftertaste of sourdough anywhere. My daughter and my husband both couldn't believe that I had even used sourdough bread when I presented them with their breakfast plates.
- Everyone loved it! My picky child even asked if we could have this for breakfast every morning. Yeah, girl, momma's not a morning person... maybe for dinner once in a while.
- Simple ingredients. We basically use standard french toast ingredients in this recipe, so most of it may already be in your home or pantry.
🥘 Ingredients
Eggs- You're going to need some eggs for this recipe.
Milk- Use milk to help get the eggs to the correct consistency.
Salt- This is a natural flavor enhancer.
Brown sugar- Using brown sugar will give you a depth of flavor as well as a nicely caramelized crust.
Vanilla- Another flavor enhancer.
Spices- You will want to use cinnamon and nutmeg for a well-spiced egg mixture.
Flour- Adding flour to your french toast mixture helps the coating to stick to the bread and helps for better results too.
Butter- This will be used to grease your griddle. You can use nonstick cooking spray if desired, but butter will give the bread a better taste.
Sourdough bread- Use a loaf of your favorite brand of sliced sourdough bread for the ultimate french toast recipe.

🍴 Recipe Tips
Unlike some other french toast recipes where they want you to use stale bread, sourdough is already a thick crumb, so you can use fresh. This means that the liquid will soak in just enough to give you a great custard filling and a golden edge on the sides.
While not a tip, I felt like letting you in on a "secret" tip to getting fluffy french toast. I didn't even know about this until recently, but adding flour to the batter really does make all of the difference. Your french toast with sourdough bread will be fluffy and taste incredible!
With regular (non-floured) french toast, my cinnamon was always rolling off the bread as I held it up to drip off excess egg. The flour, however, coats it well (think like breaded chicken), so every slice is covered in spices. Not only that but it helps to give each slice of bread the perfect texture both inside and out.

Yes, french toast can be frozen and it makes for an easy and quick breakfast later. Simply make your french toast as directed and place onto a large baking sheet in an even layer. Freeze flat for one hour before transferring to an airtight container. Then allow to remain frozen for up to 2 months. Cook in the microwave or a toaster until heated through.
We love to enjoy our french toast with fresh fruits because the tangy sour berries offset sweet syrup. That said for a more filling meal, eggs, hashbrowns and breakfast meats like sausage and bacon are always welcomed ideas to serve on the side.
You can keep your leftover french toast in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 or 5 days. Reheat it in the microwave or a toaster until warm and then serve with your favorite toppings.
