    Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

A simple and easy side dish recipe that's perfect for holidays or any day when you find yourself with sweet potatoes in need of a fast recipe.

a glass bowl filled with mashed sweet potatoes in front of an instant pot

Making mashed sweet potatoes for the holidays is a common trend among many houses in the US, but making them in the Instant Pot- not so much. Once you try these Instant Pot Mashed Sweet Potatoes, you'll wonder why you never tried making them this way before.

With such an easy step by step process, you can have flavorful, spiced sweet potatoes ready for eating as-is or turning into a fast casserole dish to share alongside your feast.

This sweet potato mash is versatile and always ready for a good holiday meal, of course, the pressure cooker mashed sweet potatoes are also great for just a weeknight meal too.

Don't forget to save your leftover mashed sweet potatoes to turn them into Mashed Sweet Potato Muffins!

    Why This Recipe Works

    1. It's convenient. Using the Instant Pot on the day of a holiday feast means that there's more space on the stove and in the oven to cook other dishes. The Instant Pot is quick, less messy, and perfect for maximizing your kitchen space on busy days.
    2. Simple ingredients. We only need a few basic ingredients like sweet potatoes, seasonings, and sugar.
    3. It's quick. Boiling potatoes on the stove can sometimes take 30 minutes or more, but with your Instant Pot, you can have perfectly mashable potatoes in about 10 minutes or so.

    🥘 Ingredients

Sweet potatoes- The star of the show is some fresh sweet potatoes. You can use yams instead if desired.

Water- You will need some water to cook our potatoes in. Instant Pots require a certain amount of water in order to operate properly.

Unsalted butter- Adding butter will give us a richer flavor and nicer potato consistency.

Brown sugar- Use some brown sugar for added sweetness and depth of flavor.

Maple syrup- This is a natural sweetener and will help to give a little flavor to the potatoes as well.

    Salt- A natural flavor enhancer.

    Vanilla extract- A flavor enhancer.

Spices- You will need some nutmeg and cinnamon for added flavor and warm spice.

For the exact amounts needed, please see the recipe card below.

    🍴 Recipe Tips

We love sweet potato casserole and I actually find myself making it a few times a year. While I normally make stovetop sweet potatoes, making mashed sweet potatoes in the Instant Pot is such a simple process that it may just become the norm around here.

Tossing everything into the IP and just letting it do its thing is so much easier than any other sweet potato recipe I've tried and I've tried a lot haha.
