two slices os custard toast on a wire rack with berries and powdered sugar

Within just 10 minutes, you can have a healthy breakfast or brunch on the table. Made with Greek yogurt, fresh berries, and packed full of nutrition, this is toast like you've never had it before.

I'll be honest, this IS a variation of the viral TikTok Custard Toast recipe that was floating around for a while, but it's so gosh darn tasty it's hard to resist sharing, so of course, I had to share it with all of you.

Tiktok recipes are almost always delicious. See for yourself with these Air Fried Oreo Cookies.

    Why This Recipe Works

    1. Air fryer or oven. On the recipe card below, I have attached instructions for making air fryer yogurt toast and instructions for making custard toast in the oven too. Perfect for making large or small batches in a hurry.
    2. It's a healthier option for breakfast. Making breakfast in a hurry can feel like a chore, so it's easy to grab something cold and packed with sugars, but this recipe is a great protein packed recipe made with natural sweeteners and fresh fruits.
    3. It's super quick to throw together! It only takes a moment to whisk together the yogurt custard filling, and it's ready to eat within a few minutes. This quick breakfast can be made even quicker by prepping the custard the night before and storing it in the fridge.

ingredients needed to make custard toast

    🥘 Ingredients

Sliced sandwich bread- You can use any presliced bread to do this. I enjoy using 9 or 12 grain bread, but you can use regular sandwich bread or even low carb bread.

Egg- This is what gives the custard its coloration and rich flavor.

Greek yogurt- For a thick consistency and added flavor, use Greek yogurt.

Maple syrup- For a natural sweetener.

    Vanilla extract- For flavor enhancement.

    Toppings

Fresh berries- You'll want to use a handful of fresh berries to decorate your toast with. Note that this is optional and there are more topping suggestions listed below.

For specific quantities, see the recipe card below.

    🔪 Instructions

Check out how to make air fryer custard toast with these simple step-by-step instructions:

Combine the egg, yogurt, and maple syrup in a small bowl with a whisk until smooth and well combined.

Use your fingers or the back of a spoon to press a "bowl" into your bread, leaving the crust untouched around the edges as this will help to hold the custard inside.

using the back of a spoon to push the bread down to make a bowl for the custard filling

Spoon the custard into the indentation that you made.

Add fresh berries or toppings if desired.

Cook in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 4-5 minutes. The custard should look set and the edges of the bread should just begin to brown.

    🧾 Substitutions

Greek yogurt. You can use regular yogurt instead of greek yogurt if you don't have it on hand. This does reduce some of the "healthy" aspects of the recipe, and the custard filling will be sweeter too.

Maple syrup. You can use honey as a natural sweetener instead of maple syrup, but agave works great too.

Bread. You can use any kind of sliced bread, from regular sandwich bread to sourdough, potato bread, whole grain, or even sliced brioche. The goal is to get a bread that is soft enough that you can press it down to make the indentation hold the custard in the middle.

    🥣 Recipe Add-Ins

    Different berries and toppings

Here is a great selection of various toppings that can really make this yogurt custard toast recipe unique.

    • Sliced peaches
    • Blackberries
    • Raspberries
    • Blueberries
    • Sliced strawberries
    • Chocolate chips
    • Sprinkles
    • Fresh fruit zest (lime, lemon, or orange)

    🍴 Recipe Tips

    Softer bread is easier

I recommend sticking with a softer bread as it will be easier to press an indent into to hold the custard.

    Do not overfill

Make sure not to overfill the custard as it does rise slightly as it bakes, making a bit of a mess if you add too much into the bread.

This custard mix can make about 2-3 slices of bread depending on how much you fill them and how big of a slice of bread is used.

    Mix well

Make sure that you whisk the custard mixture well to incorporate the eggs well because if you don't, you may end up with clumps of scrambled eggs in your toast.

    🥗 Side Dishes

Serve this toast alongside any of your favorite breakfast morning side dishes like scrambled eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and more. This is a wonderful addition to any morning meal or cup of coffee.

    ⏲️Make Ahead Instructions

You can prepare the custard filling up to 2 days in advance and keep it stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Just spoon it into the bread as directed and bake when ready.

If you want your custard toast chilled before serving, you can prepare it the night before and keep it in the fridge until ready to eat.
